Art project April 2018

Thursday and Friday, 5th and 6th April 2018

Stop Climate Change – Start of the art project – preparations

What is climate change? What is the greenhouse effect?
What can we young people do against it? Can we really stop it or are we too young?
switch off lights, TV ...when we leave the room
lower the heating, wear warmer clothes instead
walk to school or use a bike instead of a car

First we did a lot of investigations about the Paris Climate Conference and the results. Then we discussed about the meaning for the people in Germany and especially here in the North in a small city like Schwaan.
We found out a lot of things we could do at school and at home.

Then we prepared „lessons“ for younger students – grade 5 and 6 including a power point presentation, lots of posters and reports. During the next three weeks we are going to teach them about the topic Climate Change.

Teacher training

Teacher training 09.-12.April 2018

Petra Paul and Birgit Dünow take part in Nykobing/ Denmark

It is a good tradition that teachers of at least five countries (Poland, Denmark, Germany, Sweden and Lithuania) come together and learn from each other. So this was our last meeting - the dissamination conference – of the „Let's do it“ project 2016 – 2018.
We spent four days together. The youth hostel in Nykobing is a wonderful place for those meetings.
First the booklet was discussed which is a result of precious experiences of many students exchanges. There is no better way of doing teacher trainings than working together in exchanges. Then we went to different schools in Südfalster that took part in exchanges and even hosted some of them. We learned about what it means for small communities to have a big internationally working school. Discussions with teachers and students followed.
Then we got information about cooperation of Sophieschool with schools in Guldborgsund Municipality.
At the end there was enough time left for changing experiences while having a cup of coffee or sightseeing or folk dance to Danish fiddle music.

climate experiments

work on "Stop Climate Changes"Posted by Birgit Dünow Fri, April 13, 2018 14:13:24

Project grade 5 – Experimentarium

22nd March 2018 in Zingst

Topic: How easy it can be to save the planet by using

alternative energy sources

Extreme weather conditions might already be a result of climate change - that’s what we first experienced that day. We had already learned in previous projects about the danger of climate change for the weather on earth. It doesn’t necessarily have to be warmer everywhere ( like a president of a huge country always thinks), but in many regions of the earth more extreme like heavy rain, storm or snow. Our region MV might even disappear under water because of melting ice.

Heavy snow end of March, it is spring time, so we were surprised. Buses were late, some students couldn’t arrive in time and had to stay at school.

Our bus to Zingst needed more time to go to there.

The project there was very nice. The teachers there had a lot of time to answer all our questions because we were the only guests. We had a lot of time to do some interesting experiments. So we send letters and small parcels through a long pipe only with muscular strength. Then we made small trains move with solar power.

There is so much energy around us that could be used. But there is still the problem of storing it. Scientists are trying hard to solve it and have found amazing solutions.

Finally we arrived home safely on a cold and snowy spring day.

International exchange ending with great performances

Education-InternationalPosted by Birgit Dünow Wed, September 27, 2017 20:37:43
Great student's exchange-amazing performances at the end

Students from Poland, Denmark and Germany are working together in projects on the topic climate change. There have been workshops every day:art (Ole from Denmark)), music (Boris from Finland) and dance (Booma from England). All the students have been working hard and preparing a performance at the end.
The results are amazing. Today it was the first performance at Sophieskolen/Nykobing, the wonderful school that is hosting the exchange group. The workshops presented their results together with another exchange group who worked at Stubbekobing school. So it was more than an hour of a phantastic music-,art- and dance performance. The audience-students of Sophieskolen-gave lots of applause. The next performance will be tomorrow at another school and that will be the end of this September exchange. The groups will leave by bus and ferry tomorrow evening. Many students ask about the date for the next exchange and want to come again, but until then they will stay in contact and maybe visit each other during school holidays.

Agricultural exibition- Learning about ecological farming

work on "Stop Climate Changes"Posted by Birgit Dünow Sun, September 24, 2017 17:30:53

A visit to MELA- an agricultural exibition

About 60 primary school children went to the exhibition of agriculture, food, fishing, forest and gardening

All the students started for the day excursion at eight in the morning. They went to Mela by bus. After arriving there they first went round the exhibition. During their walk they got a lot of information that could be used for a quiz afterwards. They learned about ecological agriculture and gardening.

The main important question is: Where do all the products come from? Everybody should buy regionally produced food which saves energy for transport and is good for the environment.

Then they learned about energy saving and energy production in agriculture. Many farmers use solar energy panels for energy supply. There are more and more farms that produce energy from liquid manure. The most important fact is that they try to use renewable resources.

The pollution of the environment during the last decades was a result of the use of fertilizers which were often poisonous. There is a real change today because the customers force the farmers.

During their visit the primary school students learned more about dairy farming. They were also informed about the problems of milk production. Too many people want to buy cheap milk products and that makes it hard for the farmers. They also learned how important it is to treat the resources more carefully which means not to waste food.

All the little steps help. smiley

It was a fantastic day for all the kids , learning about farming outside their classrooms.

A day in the wood

work on "Stop Climate Changes"Posted by Birgit Dünow Sun, September 24, 2017 17:14:02

Respect nature

A day in the wood – Thursday, 20th July 2017

Class 4b

Surviving freetime without technical equipment

Humans and animals should be able to live in harmony when they share the same place.

The woods around us are such a place. Many years ago the parents and grandparents of today’s schoolkids used to play in nature around the towns and villages. Today it is not so common to spend freetime outside and many children don’t know how to behave when they go into the wood. It is not only a playground, it is the home of many animals.

On Thursday, 20th July 2017, 28 students went to “Letschower Wald” with their teacher and some parents. When they arrived they met the forester. They started with a quiz about wild animals. The adults were surprised about the knowledge of the young students. Lots of them have pets at home and know how to care for them. Then they learned how to “read” animal traces. They got a lot of information about wildlife and the ecosystem wood and collected ideas about how they can support this system. Cleaning Schwaan and the woods around is one step in that direction.

Lessons in the zoo

work on "Stop Climate Changes"Posted by Birgit Dünow Sun, September 24, 2017 14:11:09

Influence of climate change on wildlife

Lessons in Rostock Zoosmiley

On Thursday, the 20th July 2017, 27 students of class 4a went to Rostock Zoo. The zoo is always worth a visit but this time they wanted to learn more about the living conditions of wild animals in a zoo.
The lesson started with a long walk. The students learned that many of the wild animals would be endangered if they would go back to their natural biosphere. The zoo staff tries to create a natural environment for the animals. That is not easy because a lot of energy is needed for monkeys for example. They need a warm surrounding to feel comfortable and of course to survive.
The students learned how Rostock Zoo uses environmental friendly technologies wherever possible.
The children had a lot of time to watch the animals. Some of them like the camels seemed to be sad. So the question is: Is it really good to keep them in a zoo just to present them to an audience?
But more people must be teached about the climate change and about the danger for the animals, so at the end it is good.
During class in Darwineum they learned more about the ecosystem and how living creatures on earth influence each other and also about the food chain.
Soon there will be a Polarium in Rostock Zoo which they are working on now.
There they will especially teach people about the influence of climate change on ecosystems.
The young students will definitely be among the first guests.

Stop climate change-students change ideas in workshops

Education-InternationalPosted by Birgit Dünow Sun, September 24, 2017 11:45:21
We are in Nykobing !
Sophieskolen in Nykobing is a fantastic place for international student's exchanges.
So we are lucky to be here again with these wonderful hosts.
Yesterday, on Saturday evening, we met at the ferry terminal in Rostock to start our trip.
On the ferry we could already talk to the Polish students and teachers. They could take our luggage to Nykobing. We had to take the "normal" bus. We were lucky, the ferry was in time.
The first evening was very nice. The Danish students were waiting for us at the door to welcome us and after a few minutes the groups were mixed and talking to each other. All the teenagers were happy about the delicious pizza later.
The warming up circle was a lot of fun this morning.
